At the foothills of the Atlas Mountains in Morocco, where Mr Saint Laurent regained his full creative spirit, lay lands with some of the most extreme conditions on the planet. Arid and hot summers, strong UV radiation, dry and snow-filled winters. The plants that grow there show exceptional resistance and power.
This is where Yves Saint Laurent Beauté created its own gardens, the Ourika Gardens, to grow and harvest exceptionally potent and pure botanicals.

POTENT BOTANICALS WITH UNIQUE PROPERTIES
MOONLIGHT
CACTUS
Native to Mexico, the Queen of the Night bears magnificent, sweet-scented flowers that bloom for only six hours, once a year during the night. Before blooming, the flower fills up with lipids to produce a special oil that attracts pollinators and prompts a complex of sugars to travel through the flower and activate its blooming. Hand-harvested between July and August.
IRIS
Used widely in fragrances, the Iris also has cosmetic properties making it one of the most precious ingredients. Iris roots are hand-harvested in April.
MALLOW
Marshmallow flower contains many complex molecules which stimulates the flowering process while protecting the developing flower against UV rays. Native from Mediterranean basin, it is hand-harvested in July, the roots are collected in September.
CACTUS FIG
Abundant in the gardens of YSL Villa Oasis, Barbary Fig and cactus are a symbol of the rebellious heroine who captivates her strength and mystery, Opuntia ficus indica, grows in high altitudes, its flowers are harvested from April to July.
SAFFRON
At the foothills of the Atlas Mountain hides a precious spice: the pistil of the Saffron flower.
So potent yet so rare, the elusive nature of the Saffron pistil makes it even more precious. Unpredictable to the last, its flowers flourishes on a single morning each year: t must be pickled at this precise moment, if its power of renewal are to be captured.

MARIGOLD
Marigold grows extremely well in the Ourika Valley – the extreme weather conditions at this altitude prompt the plant to produce more flowers. The flowers are hand-harvested in YSL BEAUTY Ourika Gardens between April and June by the cooperative of women.

The pomegranate is resistant to drought and can store much moisture and vitality in its fruits.
Pomegranate juice extract is used for its high concentration in antioxidants, vitamin C, to protect skin and lips.

WALNUT LEAVES
Walnut trees can only grow in mountainous places such as the Moroccan Atlas Mountains. Mature leaves extracts is highly concentrated in tannins, flavonoids for a smoother and radiant skin. In mascara it helps to smooth lashes to help provide a more intense color payoff.
